Mitral Valvuloplasty Using the Inoue Balloon Catheter Technique To the Editor: I read with interest the article on long-term follow-up after percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty with the Inoue balloon catheter by Hernandez et al.1 They reported a restenosis rate of 39% at 7 years. My colleagues from China and I recently reported our experience with the same technique in a follow-up study up to 11 years in the first 202 patients2 among the original 4832 patients treated in China.3 The restenosis rate was 8%, which is very respectable and actually better than that after surgical closed commissurotomy (25% to 28%).2 Why the restenosis rate in the Chinese patients is much lower than that in the Spanish patients is unclear. Our experience as well as a series of recent reports of excellent long-term results have strengthened the previous conclusion that percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty using the Inoue balloon technique should be the procedure of first choice in most patients with mitral stenosis worldwide.4

Immediate Results of Percutaneous Mitral Balloon Valvuloplasty in Patients with Mitral Stenosis
Introduction: Mitral stenosis is a prevalent valvular disease in developing countries. Percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV) is the gold standard treatment. The main objective of this study was to assess the initial results of PMBV in patients with mitral stenosis during 16 years (2002-2018) in Mashhad, Iran. Materials and Methods: From April 2002 to March 2018, 770 patients underwen...
متن کاملSHORT TERM CLINICAL OUTCOME OF PERCUTANEOUS BALLOON MITRAL VALVULOPLASTY VERSUS SURGICAL CLOSED MITRAL COMMISSUROTOMY
BaIlon mitral valvuloplasty and closed mitral valve conunissurotomy were performed in 450 and 127 patients, respectively. Also, 254 patients with severe mitral stenosis were enrolled in a prospective randomized trial comparing the two procedures. Immediately after balloon mitral valvuloplasty, mean left atrial pressure was 11.38±3.54 mmHg, transmitral valve gradient was 1.8±2 mmHg, and mit...

Tsung O. Cheng, MD, Professor of Medicine, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (USA) I read with interest the article on the use of transesophageal echo-cardiography (TEE) in monitoring emergency percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV) in a patient with massive left atrial thrombosis by Chirillo et al. [1]. Although I agree that TEE was of great value in monitoring each step...
متن کاملPercutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty during pregnancy: long-term follow-up of infant growth and development.
We have studied the long-term growth and development of seven infants who had been exposed during the foetal stage to ionising irradiation associated with percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty between 1 April 1991 and 30 November 1993. We found that infants of mothers who underwent this procedure during the second and third trimester of pregnancy had normal long-term growth and development....

BACKGROUND Percutaneous balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty is the procedure of choice for uncomplicated severe or symptomatic pulmonary stenosis. The present study describes our experience in balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty using the Inoue balloon catheter in adolescent and adult patients. AIMS To assess the immediate and mid-term outcomes of percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty with Inoue balloon...
